What a Good Faith Estimate Is
A Good Faith Estimate is a written estimate of expected charges for healthcare items or services. It is based on information known at the time it is created and is intended to help uninsured or self-pay clients understand expected costs before receiving services.
Who May Be Entitled to Receive One
If you do not have insurance or choose not to use insurance to pay for services, you may request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling or receiving services. You may also receive one when services are scheduled in advance, depending on timing and applicable requirements.
What the Estimate Can and Cannot Predict
The estimate reflects expected charges based on information available at the time. Actual services may vary depending on clinical needs, session frequency, changes in treatment goals, cancellations, referrals, or additional services requested.
If a Bill Is Significantly Higher
If your final bill is substantially higher than the Good Faith Estimate, you may have dispute rights under federal law. Federal resources currently describe a dispute threshold of at least $400 more than the estimate, but requirements and procedures should be checked using current official guidance.
